Fenwick Announces New Head Coaches for Swimming and Water Polo

Award-winning coach Bryan Lee and Hall of Famer Mike Gruszeczki ’94 join the aquatics staff.

Fenwick High School is proud to announce the addition of two distinguished leaders to its aquatics department: boys’ and girls’ swim coach Bryan Lee and boys’ water polo coach Mike Gruszeczki ’94. Both bring elite-level competitive experience and a commitment to the development of student-athletes.

Lee steps into the head coaching role after a successful turn as the Friars’ assistant coach last season. He earned the 2025 American Swimming Coaches Association "30 Under 30" Award for his work at Glenbrook Swim Club, where he served as the lead coach for both the top 13-14 age group and the developmental high school group. A South Korean immigrant and varsity swimmer at Glenbrook South High School, Lee began his competitive swimming journey with the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club under legendary coach Steve Iida.

“Since beginning my coaching career, I have found tremendous fulfillment in helping young athletes reach their full potential, not only as swimmers but as people," Lee said. "I hope to inspire the same love for the sport that shaped my own life and to create an environment where every swimmer can grow with confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation for swimming.”

Gruszeczki returns to his alma mater to lead the program he once helped dominate: as an all-state water polo player at Fenwick, he contributed to three State Championship teams. Internationally, he represented Team USA on the United States National Youth Team and competed in the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival. He guided the Friars to five state titles as a coach for the Fenwick boys’ water polo team from 1998 to 2004.

“I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to coach again at Fenwick. When I left in 2004, I always hoped to come back some day,” said Gruszeczki, who was inducted into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2007. “Fenwick provided the foundation for me to succeed academically, athletically and professionally…the faculty and coaches I had at Fenwick had an incredible impact on my life. I look forward to working with our outstanding student-athletes and helping them grow. Together as Friars, we will accomplish great things.”

With these two appointments, Fenwick High School solidifies its commitment to maintaining its reputation as a powerhouse in Illinois high school aquatics while prioritizing character and academic excellence. “We are thrilled to welcome Coaches Lee and Gruszeczki to their new roles,” Director of Aquatics Brigitte Kusevskis '96 said. “Bryan’s modern approach and technical precision complement Mike's championship pedigree and deep roots in our community. Our student athletes will be guided by leaders who embody Fenwick excellence.”
