Named Scholarships

Named Scholarships

All tuition assistance at Fenwick is provided through the generosity of benefactors, many of whom have chosen to create named scholarship funds.  Recipients of tuition assistance from these named funds will be notified after tuition assistance awards are granted.  Unless otherwise indicated, all named scholarships are part of a students' overall tuition assistance package, not in addition to, and there is no additional process to apply for tuition assistance through these funds.  Please see the complete list and brief description of named scholarship funds below:

  • Andrew M. “Andy” Arellano Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established after the retirement of speech teacher Andy Arellano, who taught every Fenwick student from 1972-73 through 2019-20, this Fund was established by several of his former students in recognition and appreciation of the oratorial life skills they learned in Mr. Arellano’s class and attribute to his excellent teaching.  This Fund will provide one or more annual scholarships in perpetuity to deserving Fenwick students.
  • Barney/Fourie Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This Fund has been created by the C. Patrick “Pat” Barney ‘66 in honor of his father and brother as well as their friends the Fourie brothers, all Fenwick alumni, and their appreciation for the educational opportunity and life-long friendships that Fenwick High School provided them.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually in perpetuity to student(s) at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the Barney and Fourie families enjoyed at the School.
  • Jerome J. ‘51 and Mary L. Brault Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund has been created by the donors and their children to recognize Jerry and Mary Brault’s commitment to Fenwick and Catholic education. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance to a Fenwick student with demonstrated financial need, be of the Catholic faith, and possess good moral character.
  • Lois & Edward Brennan Scholarship Fund

    Originally funded via a generous gift through the estate of Lois Brennan, this Fund was established to memorialize the gratitude of Lois and Ed Brennan ’51 to Fenwick and to provide tuition assistance to Fenwick students from the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.
  • Carol & Ronald Calabrese Scholarship

    This Fund was created by Ron ’62 and Carol Calabrese in recognition of the donors’ long affiliation with Fenwick and their gratitude to Fenwick for what it has done for their family. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance to Fenwick students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Franklin D. Capitanini '50 Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by the children of Franklin D. Capitanini ’50 (Gina, Frank ’78, Lisa and Alfredo ’81) in loving memory of their father as a way to honor him and to denote his affection and fondness for Fenwick High School. The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to Fenwick students in perpetuity.
  • The Collins Engineers Scholarship Fund

    This Scholarship has been created by Tom Collins’61 in recognition of his long affiliation with Fenwick High School and his gratitude to Fenwick. The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School.  Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need.  Students with financial need who express an interest in STEM may also be considered.
  • Dennis C. Cusack '77 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This Fund has been created by Joan Conley in recognition of and in affection for her brother Dennis and his affiliation with Fenwick High School. The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more tuition assistance scholarships annually to student(s) who attend Fenwick High School and can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that Dennis experienced at Fenwick.
  • The G. Howard ’70 and Patricia Ember Friar Excellence Fund

    This Fund has been created by the Donors in recognition of their family’s affiliation with Fenwick High School and gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide four quarter-tuition scholarships annually to four students – a freshman, a sophomore, a junior and a senior - at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the Donors’ Family experienced at Fenwick.
  • Fenwick Fathers' Club Endowed Tuition Continuation Fund

    The purpose of the Fund is to permanently ensure that the Fenwick Fathers' Club mission to provide "tuition continuation" grants to Fenwick High School students continues in perpetuity. The Fund will provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School whose parent(s) die while a student is enrolled at Fenwick High School.
  • Michael E. Finnegan Scholarship Fund

    This Fund was established after the untimely passing of Michael E. Finnegan ’75 by his family and friends in honor of Michael’s generous spirit and humble nature.  This Fund will provide one or more scholarships annually in perpetuity to Fenwick student(s) who come from St. Angela’s grade school (first preference) or another Catholic grammar school located in the City of Chicago (second preference). 
  • Fuscone Family Scholarship

    This Fund was established via a generous gift from Richard Fuscone ’69 to provide tuition assistance to deserving Fenwick students.
  • Michael F. Galvin '09 Friar Scholarship Fund

    This Fund has been created in memory of Michael and to honor his affiliation with Fenwick High School and as a gesture of affection for Michael and his family. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance scholarships annually to students at Fenwick who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that Michael experienced at Fenwick.
  • John J. Gearen., Sr. '32 Memorial Scholarship Fund

    This Fund was established via generous gifts from John J. Gearen ’32 both during his lifetime and through his estate in recognition and gratitude for his family’s long affiliation with Fenwick and to provide tuition assistance to deserving students.
  • The Kathleen & Robert Gorman'71 Scholarship

    The Kathleen and Robert Gorman'71 Scholarship was created in gratitude for Bo's Fenwick education. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance in perpetuity to Fenwick's students of color with demonstrated financial need, preferably residing at/ near Chicago's west side.
  • William Hamilton '46 Endowed Scholarship

    Established via generous gifts from William Hamilton ‘46 during and after his lifetime, this fund was established in gratitude for the donor’s experience and long affiliation with Fenwick in order to provide tuition assistance to deserving students.
  • Thomas & Judy Herbstritt Scholarship

    This Fund was established through the generosity of Tom and Judy Herbstritt, former parents and long-time supporters and volunteers within the Fenwick community, to provide tuition assistance to deserving students.
  • Heritage Scholarship Fund

    Funded through the generosity of several benefactors, this fund was established to provide tuition assistance in perpetuity to deserving students of Latinx heritage.
  • Lawrence ’52 and Dorothy Holmes Scholarship

    This Fund was established through the generosity of Larry ’52 and Dorothy Holmes in recognition of the positive impact and influence Fenwick had on Larry’s life and to provide opportunities for others to benefit from the positive experiences of a Fenwick education.
  • The Javors Family Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This Fund has been created by the donors in recognition of their affiliation with Fenwick High School and their gratitude for what the school has done for them.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the members of the Javors family have experienced over multiple generations.
  • George M. ’41 and Adelaide M. Keller Scholarship

    Originally funded through a generous bequest from the estate of George Keller ’41, this Fund was established in gratitude for the many positive influences the Fenwick education and friendships had on George and Adelaide throughout their lifetimes.
  • Krol Family Scholarship

    Annually awarded to the incoming freshman who scores highest on the math portion of the Fenwick entrance exam, this $1,000 scholarship celebrates the tradition of excellence at Fenwick in STEM subjects and in gratitude for Krol family’s experience as parents and students at Fenwick. 
  • Maragret and A.G Lafley Scholarship

    Funded via generous gifts from Alan G. ’65 and Margaret Lafley, this Fund was established to  annually provide a full-tuition scholarship to one of Fenwick’s most financially challenged and deserving students.
  • Harold McKee, Jr. '55 Scholarship Fund

    This Fund was established by Harold J. McKee ’55 with generous gifts throughout his lifetime in  recognition of and in gratitude for his long-affiliation with Fenwick as an alumnus, parent and long-time, active volunteer and supporter.
  • Helen C. Oakey Scholarship

    Funded via the generosity of James A. Oakey ’52, this fund was established in loving memory of Jim’s mother Helen in honor of and in recognition for her commitment to her family and to Catholic education.  This fund provides tuition assistance for Fenwick students from Ascension parish.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Pat O'Brien '59 Endowed Fund

    Originally funded via a generous gift from Pat ’59 and Linda O’Brien, this Fund was established in appreciation for and recognition of the significant positive impact Fenwick had on the Donors. This Fund was established to provide current tuition assistance to deserving Fenwick students.
  • The Mr. and Mrs. Pat O’Brien ‘59 Endowed Fund

    This Fund has been created by Pat ’59 and Linda O’Brien in gratitude to Fenwick High School and to create educational opportunities for future Friars.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School. 
  • Pass the Torch Endowed Scholarship Fund

    In cooperation with and in the spirit of the Pass the Torch golf outing and award, this scholarship fund was established by participants of the Pass the Torch golf outing to “pass the torch” of a Fenwick education to future generations of students by providing tuition assistance annually to (a) deserving student(s).
  • Robert J and Joan E Rooney Scholarship

    This Fund was created by Tim Rooney ’75 in loving memory of his parents, Robert and Joan, in recognition of their dedication to Catholic education and the Rooney family’s long affiliation with Fenwick.  It is also created in recognition of his gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has meant to him, his brothers and his sons – all of whom are Fenwick graduates – and his entire family. 
  • Ryan Family Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by the David J. ‘79 and Theresa Ryan Family in appreciation for Fenwick and to provide tuition assistance in perpetuity.
  • Kenneth Sitzberger Scholarship

    Funded by friends and classmates of Ken Sitzberger ’60, this fund was established in memory of Ken and his many accomplishments that have shone a positive light on Fenwick.
  • Patrick Smith Scholarship

    Funded via a generous estate gift from Margaret Smith, this fund was established in her son Patrick’s (’66) memory in honor of him and in gratitude for what Fenwick meant to Pat.
  • Claire and Albert J Speh, Jr Scholarship

    Funded via many generous gifts throughout their lifetimes and beyond, this fund was established by Albert ’37 and Claire Speh in gratitude to Fenwick and to provide tuition assistance to generations of deserving Fenwick students.
  • Dennis Sullivan '56 Endowed Baseball Fund

    This Fund has been created and is currently being funded by Dennis W. Sullivan ’56 in recognition of his long affiliation with Fenwick High School, his gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for him and for his love of baseball.
  • Jay Tonne ’58 and George Korzeniewski ’58 Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by Jay Tonne in fond memory of his friend and classmate George Korzeniewski and in gratitude for the education they received at Fenwick.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to Fenwick student(s) in perpetuity.
  • The Frank Trankina '52 Endowed Scholarship

    This Fund was created by Frank Trankina ‘52 and an anonymous donor in recognition of Fenwick’s long history of educating students and preparing them for the future. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance to Fenwick students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Mrs. Stephen "Kay" Victor Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund was created by Stephen Victor ‘51 in loving memory of his wife in recognition of his long history with Fenwick and for what the school has done for him. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance to Fenwick students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Dr. James Watts '51 Scholarship

    Funded via generous gifts from the family and friends of Dr. James S. Watts ’51, this Fund was created by his son James S. Watts II in honor of his father in recognition of his dedication to Catholic education and the Watts family’s long affiliation with Fenwick High School and his gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has meant to him and his family.
  • The Daniel G. Watts '77 and Maureen O'Brien Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund has been created by the donors in recognition of their long history with Fenwick and for what the school has done for them and their family. The purpose of the Fund is to provide tuition assistance to Fenwick students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Ray Wicklander '55 Scholarship Fund

    This Fund was created by Ray Wicklander, Jr. in honor of his parents, Ray, Sr. and Callista, in recognition of their dedication to Catholic education and the Wicklander family’s long affiliation with Fenwick High School and his gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has meant to him and his family.
  • Class of '59 Roger Finnell Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established by 1959 classmates, this Fund was established in gratitude for all that Fenwick has meant to them and to honor their classmate Roger Finnell, who has been teaching math, producing and directing plays and the Banua variety show, and chaperoning trips to London for over fifty years at Fenwick. This Fund was created to provide one or more annual tuition assistance scholarships to deserving students.
  • Class of '58 Endowed scholarship Fund

    Currently being funded by the Class of 1958 in gratitude for what Fenwick has meant to them.
  • Class of '60 Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by the Class of ’60 in recognition of their affiliation with Fenwick High School and for their gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them. The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School in perpetuity who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the members of the Class of 1960 experienced at Fenwick.
  • Class of '62 Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by Joe Tate and other members of the class of ’62 in recognition of the Donors’ long affiliation with Fenwick High School, their gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them, and their desire to provide a Fenwick education to future generations of Friars.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more tuition assistance scholarships annually to Fenwick student(s) in perpetuity. 
  • '68 Class of Champions Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This fund was undertaken on the occasion of the “Class of Champions” 50th reunion from Fenwick in 2018.  The Class of ‘68 created this Fund in recognition of their affiliation with Fenwick and for their gratitude for what the school has done for them.  This fund will provide one or more scholarships annually to Fenwick student(s) in perpetuity who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the members of the Class of 1968 experienced at Fenwick.
  • Class of ’70 Endowed Scholarship Fund

    On the occasion of their 50th reunion from Fenwick, this Fund has been created by The Class of 1970 in recognition of the Donors’ long affiliation with Fenwick High School and their gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them. Once fully funded, the purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually in perpetuity to student(s) at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that members of the Class of 1970 experienced at Fenwick.
  • Class of '74 Scholarship

    This fund was established by the Class of ’74 in recognition of their affiliation with Fenwick High School and for their gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them. The purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to student(s) at Fenwick High School in perpetuity who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the members of the Class of 1974 experienced at Fenwick.
  • Class of ’91 Scholarship Fund

    On the occasion of their 30th reunion from Fenwick, this Fund has been created by The Class of 1991 in recognition of the Donors’ long affiliation with Fenwick High School and their gratitude to Fenwick for what the school has done for them. Once fully funded, the purpose of the Fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually in perpetuity to student(s) at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that members of the Class of 1991 experienced at Fenwick.

  • Anne Smedinghoff Memorial Scholarship

    Established in loving memory of Anne Smedinghoff ’05 by her family and annually funded via memorial gifts made in her name, this Fund provides an annual scholarship to a current Fenwick student with particular interest in international relations and/or government service.
  • The Borek Family Scholarship Fund

    This Fund was created by the Borek family to help a student(s) in need of financial assistance. Initially pledged at $100,000, this Fund provides one or more scholarships, totaling $10,000/year for ten years, beginning in 2020-2021.
  • Mark Cecola ‘95 Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by his classmates in fond memory of Mark Cecola ‘95.  This Fund was created to provide tuition assistance to one or more deserving Fenwick students in need.
  • John Crowder Scholarship Fund

    Established in loving memory by several family members, classmates and friends of John J. Crowder ’81 in gratitude for what Fenwick High School meant to John, his family and friends, this Fund is funded via annual gifts from a separate 501(c)3 organization supported by John’s friends and family.  This Fund was created to provide one or more annual tuition assistance scholarships to students.
  • The Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund

    Originally funded by David and Tracey Gau, this Fund was established to provide tuition assistance on an as-needed, emergency basis to current students whose families have suffered a financial setback and are unable to cover tuition payments, leaving the student at risk of not continuing at Fenwick.
  • The Fleming Family Scholarship Fund

    This Fund has been created by Richard and Diana Fleming and their family in recognition of their family’s affiliation with Fenwick High School, their gratitude to Fenwick for the educational opportunity afforded to Petria ’02 and Douglas ‘95 (deceased) and their desire to see that educational opportunity extended to other students who may not otherwise be able to obtain it.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide a total of $15,000 in financial aid scholarships split between two or more honor roll students at Fenwick High School who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that the Donors’ family experienced at Fenwick.
  • Richard Honquest '52 Scholarship Fund

    This fund was established by Richard Honquest in recognition of his affiliation with Fenwick High School and in gratitude for what Fenwick has done for him.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide two half-tuition scholarships annually for four years to two students – a boy and a girl – who can benefit from the quality education and formative experience that Richard experienced at Fenwick.
  • LaRon'92 and Kristyn Johnson Scholarship

    Established in 2023 in appreciation for LaRon's education and formation at Fenwick High School. The Scholarship supports Fenwick students with financial need residing in the Austin neighborhood.  A freshman, sophomore, junior and senior each annually receive the LaRon'92 and Kristyn Johnson Scholarship.   
  • Fr. Andrew Kolzow, O.P. Memorial Scholarship Fund

    From 1959 to 1975, Fr. Andrew Kolzow served as teacher, Principal and President of Fenwick High School.  He mentored and positively influenced a generation of young men during that time and was beloved by many.  This Fund was created by Dr. Dominic J. Catrambone ‘67 in recognition of all that Fr. Kolzow did and meant to him and other Friars of his era and to their respective affiliation with Fenwick High School.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide at least a $2,500 scholarship for a rising junior or senior. 
  • John Malone "JM52" Scholarship

    Established in loving memory by the parents of John J. Malone ’11 in gratitude for what Fenwick High School meant to John, this Fund is funded via annual gifts from a separate 501(c)3 organization supported by John’s friends and family.  “52” was John’s basketball jersey number and is a reminder of John’s continuing presence at Fenwick.  This Fund was created to provide one or more annual tuition assistance scholarships to students. 
  • Ida May Muller Scholarship

    This Fund was created and is currently being funded by Len Muller ’56 in loving memory of hismother Ida May Muller in appreciation for all that she sacrificed to ensure that Len could attend Fenwick High School.  This Fund provides at least two annual $5,000 scholarship awards to incoming Fenwick freshmen who graduated from St. Mary’s of Riverside elementary school.
  • Ritchie Family Scholarship

    This fund was established by Meredith and Bill Ritchie ’79 in honor of Meredith’s mother, Cecile “Susie” Tiller, who firmly believed in the value of education to further women’s passions.  This fund annually provides a $2,500 scholarship to a female Fenwick student who plans to matriculate to a four-year college or university.
  • Spingola Family Scholarship

    Originally funded via gifts from the extended Spingola family, this Fund was established by Janet Dovidio in loving memory of her father and in appreciation for Fenwick High School.  This Fund was established to provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to a student of Italian heritage who has shown to be an exemplary student in the areas of service and ministry.
  • St. Catherine/St. Lucy and Fenwick Partners Scholarship Fund

    As part of the Memorandum of Understanding between St. Catherine/St. Lucy School to work in “partnership” in a number of areas, this Fund was established by SCSL and Fenwick alumni to provide tuition assistance scholarships to graduates from St. Catherine/St. Lucy who matriculate to Fenwick and need help to “bridge the gap” between other sources of tuition assistance (including Fenwick’s “normal” financial aid process and third-party scholarships) and the full cost of tuition at Fenwick. 
  • Class of '52 Scholarship

    Originally funded via an anonymous gift from a member of the Fenwick class of 1952, this Fund was created to provide the equivalent of one annual full tuition scholarship to one or more deserving Fenwick students.  In appreciation and gratitude for all that Fenwick has done for them, many members of the class of ’52 have since contributed to this Fund.
  • Class of 1973 George E. Tapling Memorial Scholarship

    This Fund was established by several members of the Class of ’73 in memory of their friend and classmate George Tapling.  This Fund was created to provide current tuition assistance to St. Giles School alumni who matriculate to Fenwick.  Many members of the Class of ’73 and other friends and family of George have since contributed to the Fund.
  • Class of 1991 Scholarship Fund

    Created on the occasion of their 30th reunion by members of the Class of 1991, this fund was established in their long affiliation with Fenwick High School and their gratitude for what the school has done for them.
