Fenwick Varsity Rugby Defeats Brother Rice for first time in team history
Rugby has been a sport at Fenwick since 2012, and in those 14 years, they had never defeated the Brother Rice side in a varsity rugby match. That all changed tonight as the Friars routed the Crusaders, 47-5 in the Catholic Conference opener for both schools.
Fenwick began the scoring early, with a long kick run by senior TJ Nix, who also tacked on the conversion kick, giving the Friars a 7-0 lead. After a sloppy period of play by both teams, Fenwick took advantage of a short field, and Patrick Nix scored a try in the corner in his first Varsity start, giving the Friars an early 12 - 0 lead.
Brother Rice fought on, and scored a try to cut the lead to 12 -5 midway through the first half. Fenwick continued to press on, and senior Nick Walzer punched in a short run, and with the TJ Nix conversion, Fenwick went into the half with a 19 -5 lead.
Not satisfied with the first half performance, the boys continued to assert their advantages in the second half. Fenwick found good success on the edges of the Brother Rice defense, and TJ Nix, Patrick Nix, Eiam Staples, and Cal Hudson ripped off long runs, with Will Schuler converting each try. This pushed the score to 47-5 at games end.
In addition to the high flying offense, the Fenwick defensive effort was stellar. Defensive standouts included Thomas Haraburda, Charlie Becker, Nick Walzer and Tim Mulcahy. All in all it was a complete team effort.
Fenwick still has matches with Mt Carmel, St Rita and Marist to navigate, but defeating Brother Rice will be a victory that is remembered by all who witnessed it.
