Friar Ruggers Complete Comeback, Defeat St. Rita

The Fenwick Friars rugby team battled a tough and determined St Rita Rugby team on Saturday at St Rita.  Trailing by 5 points with less than 5 minutes to play, the Friars completed a rousing comeback and defeated the Mustangs 24 - 22.

The opening 20 minutes of the game were scoreless, with both defenses proving to be unbreakable.  Big hit after big hit marked the game, and it became obvious that the winner of this match would prove to be the toughest team on this day.

Fenwick scored first on a try by TJ Nix, following the first sustained offensive stretch by the Friars.  Undaunted, St. Rita very quickly scored a try of their own to knot the game at 5.  Eaiam Staples scored a try near the end of the first half, and Patrick Nix added the conversion kick to give the Friars some breathing room at 12 - 5.  The Friars very nearly ended the first half with another try, but the Mustangs held off th threat to close th first half.

The Friars came out in the second half determined to stretch the lead and perhaps break the Mustang spirit.  They were successful in scoring the first try of the second half, with Will Schueller touching down a kicked ball into the try zone, to give the Friars a 17 - 5 lead.

Whether the Friars relaxed on the 12 point lead, or whether the Mustangs heart and spirit remained strong, St Rita went to work, capitalizing on some sloppy play by the Friars, as well as the Friars being a man down due to a penalty.  The Mustangs scored 17 consecutive points, and with less than 5 minutes left in the match, St. Rita held a 22 - 17 lead.

The Friars showed their own heart and resiliancy, with Will Schueller applying pressure on the Mustangs with a great kick to pin St Rita inside their own 5 yard line.  After a wild scramble, a short St Rita kick was grabbed by Tim Mulcahy, who managed to score a try, tying the game at 22.  With the game on the line, Patrick Nix conversion kick hit the left upright and deflected through the uprights for the game winning score.

Next up for the Friars is a game against Marist, at Marist on Friday May 9.  This game will likely determine the conference winner, come support your Friar Ruggers.
