TENNIS LOVE: Fenwick Girls Win 2022 Class 1A Illinois State Championship

The Friars' team surpassed high expectations with record-setting domination!
The Fenwick Girls' Tennis team surpassed even the high expectations that were on them going into the IHSA 1A State Tournament last Thursday through Saturday, with a record-setting domination of the field of 78 teams represented.

The team finished first with 39 points, tying the best ever result in the 1A tournament, and with a 10-point margin of victory over runner-up Latin. The Friars were the first team ever in 1A to score the most points in both singles and doubles.

Despite having the state title clinched on Friday by winning 18 of their 21 matches to that point, the team advanced to the third day of competition, continued to battle and racked up more points on Saturday:

  • Trinity Hardin and Kate Trifilio advanced to the consolation game in doubles.

  • Rachel Abraham and Maeve Paris pulled off their second upset of a top-8 seed in beating Latin to advance to the consolation final, which went the distance and was the last match of the tournament to finish.

  • Megan Trifilio placed 4th in singles, losing in three sets in the 3rd-place match.

  • Top-seeded Lily Brecknock won the first ever Fenwick state tennis singles championship, 6-2, 6-4, over the #2 seed from Wolcott, ending the match with a service ace.
Thanks to coaches Sullivan, Jerger, Trifilio, Cohen and Draski for helping to coach the 26 matches played and to all the students, teachers, parents and administrators who came out to witness and cheer on the best state performance ever by a Fenwick tennis team and one of the most comprehensive ever in Illinois high school tennis history.

"The team was proud to wear the shield this season and gave a loud performance of the fight song before exiting the premises!" reports proud Head Coach Gerard Sullivan.
