Fenwick Math Team Qualifies for State

Friar ‘mathletes’ headed to State Finals for 29th consecutive year!
Results are in: The entire, 41-member Fenwick Math Team has qualified for the State Finals in late April! This marks the 29th straight year that our Friar “mathletes” are going downstate!!
First-place regional winners are the Geometry, Pre-Calculus (top score in state) and Oral Math Topic (another top score) teams. Oak Parkers Toby Yang '24 and Finley Huggins '22 ranked 1st in geometry and pre-calc (perfect score: 40/40), respectively.
Overall, Fenwick ranks third in state right now, “but the top four teams after Regionals are tightly bunched, so any of the four could be state champs,” explains retiring moderator/coach Roger Finnell ’59. “Hard work before April 30 could finally decide it!”

8 Regional Highlights

  1. Oral Topic Team - tied for 1st in state! “Great work by Finley and Hugo Nunez, Jr. ’22 [Berwyn, IL],” says Mr. Finnell.

  2. Pre-Calculus Team - 1st in state with a 16-point lead!

  3. Algebra 1 Team - 2nd in state, led by Kyra Miller ’25 (38/40) of Riverside, IL.

  4. Geometry Team - 2nd in state (by one question); led by Yang (38/40).

  5. 8-Person Frosh/Soph Team - 2nd in state!

  6. Calculator Team - 6th in state and “working hard to improve,” says Finnell.

  7. Algebra 2 Team - 7th in state; led by Quinn Hynes ’23 (Western Springs, IL).

  8. Junior/Senior 8-Person Team - 10th in state. “Two small errors cost four places,” Finnell laments, but “a recent change in strategy made a big difference at the last practice.”

“Thanks to all team members, especially the seniors, for your many hours of time and effort to win so many awards for your school,” praises Mr. Finnell. “Spots on each team event roster will be finalized soon. Keep putting in the time and effort!”
