The World Language Department offers a four- or five-year sequence in French, German, Italian, Latin, Mandarin and Spanish. All students take four years of world language. An AP course is offered as the culmination of all five language programs. Every world language course includes some cultural or historical units. In the modern languages, the goal is to provide a balanced program of reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension.
Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy
The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and Commendation toward Biliteracy recognize students who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and in one or more other languages. In Illinois, students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy can earn Foreign Language course credit at public colleges and universities. The Seal and Commendation may also help students seek advanced college placement and professional opportunities requiring bilingual proficiency.
Fenwick offers graduating students the opportunity to earn the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy and Commendation Toward Biliteracy in their languages of study at Fenwick and, when possible, in their heritage languages. Students’ awards will be officially designated on their transcripts and on seals for their high school diplomas.
