2023 Anne Smedinghoff '05 Memorial Lecture

Please join the Fenwick Community on Monday, April 3, in the Gearen Library to hear guest speaker and alumnus John Doyle '05.
John Doyle '05 is the speaker on Monday, April 3 at Fenwick's Anne Smedinghoff Memorial Lecture on Government Service. A former active duty U.S. Navy officer and now a practicing attorney in Chicago, John was a classmate of Anne's who says her death had a direct impact on some of his career decisions.

As a litigation associate at the Chicago law firm of Latham & Watkins LLP, he focuses on investigations and litigation related to securities and professional liability matters. He also has served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Navy, a law clerk for the City of Chicago and an intergovernmental affairs intern at the White House.

After graduating from Fenwick, John attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he graduated with a degree in Politics. John worked on the 2010 campaign of Governor Pat Quinn before attending Northwestern University School of Law.  Through many of those years, he also worked as a deckhand and bartender on Chicago architectural boat cruises.

In 2013, he commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. After training in Newport, RI, John was stationed at Naval Station Mayport, FL, and Naval Base Kitsap, WA, working as a military prosecutor and defense counsel. John also spent time underway on the aircraft carrier USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74).  In 2018, he left the Navy and returned to Chicago where he currently lives with his wife, Madison, and son, Jack.

He presently maintains an active pro-bono practice, working with veterans, students with disabilities and asylum seekers.

NOTE: This event is free of charge and no registration is required.
