Faculty Focus for January 2023: Mr. Peter Gallo

Social studies teacher Mr. Peter Gallo is in his sweet 16th year at Fenwick!
What is your educational background?

PG: Bachelors from Loyola, Chicago and MBA from Dominican University

What did you do prior to becoming a teacher at Fenwick?

PG: I was not very good at selling a variety of things -- everything from insurance, investments, printing, advertising services. It was while I was working in advertising that I decided to go into education.

What are you currently reading for enjoyment?

PG: I read primarily business articles online. It helps me in my instruction, and it is always new and unpredictable.

What interests do you pursue outside of the classroom?

PG: Yoga, other forms of exercise, practicing my faith.

To what teams and/or clubs did you belong as a student?

PG: I was a football and baseball player in high school [Benet Academy in Lisle, IL). I also was very involved in campus ministry at Benet.

Which clubs/sports/activities do you run at Fenwick?

PG: Investment Club.

What quality/characteristic marks a Fenwick student?

PG: Respect for others.

When did you decide to become a teacher, and why did you choose this field?

PG: I was in my early 30s, and September 11th had a significant impact on me. It was then that I decided that I wanted the most meaningful job, and for me that is teaching.

What personal strengths do you find especially helpful in your teaching?

PG: Perhaps my ability to relate to students' difficulties. High school is not an easy time for anybody. I always try to remember how significant a loss, or an injury, or a disappointment was for me in high school. That helps me to keep the right perspective on teaching.

What are your favorite classes to teach?

PG: Economics

What is the greatest success you have had in teaching?

PG: The greatest successes that I have had in teaching are when I receive emails from former students who tell me how my teaching impacted their future.

What challenges face students today?

PG: Unquestionably, the learning loss that has taken place as a result of the pandemic will impact them. Students should focus on building up their personal character, faith and inner strength so that they can confront the challenges that are in their future.
