Fenwick Class of 2022 Celebrates 91st Commencement Ceremony

Members of the Class of ’22 contributed to four state championships this school year: two in academics and two in athletics!
The 262 senior students who received their diplomas from Fenwick High School on May 27 made sure they left their mark on the 93-year-old Catholic institution. In the classroom, the Friars’ Math Team won the Class 2A championship in Illinois.

At the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) competition, Fenwick's senior group of Zachariah Dahhan (Elmwood Park, IL), Finley Huggins (Oak Park, IL), Kathryn Nairn (Lombard, IL) and Hugo Nunez, Jr. (Berwyn, IL) earned the highest average, overall score in the state.
Fenwick STEM students also placed an impressive second in Illinois for the Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science competition (formerly known as WYSE). Meanwhile, the Class of 2022’s composite ACT score is 25.71; the top 10% of all test-takers averaged an impressively high score of 34.5.
These academic feats were matched by some major athletic accomplishments. The fall of 2021 ranks among the best seasons in the Friars’ long history. Last November, the boys’ cross-country (Class 2A) and football (5A) teams won state championships. In addition, the Fenwick girls’ tennis team placed third in state (Class 1A), and the girls’ soccer team recently placed fourth in state (Class AA).
The May 27th commencement ceremony, held at the UIC Forum in Chicago, featured student speaker and “mathlete” Nunez, Jr., who will attend Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Valedictorian Ms. Nairn will join Nunez at Harvard, while salutatorian Elizabeth Griswold (Western Springs, IL) heads to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Also taking the podium was 2013 alumna Mary Kate Callahan, a former para-athlete who shared an inspiring message, and retiring math teacher Roger Finnell, who has taught at the school since 1963! (Mr. Finnell is a ’59 graduate of Fenwick.)
