Looking Back at Friar Wrestling in 2019-20

February 27, 2020

Alumnus and Coach Seth Gamino '01 recaps his first season as Fenwick's head coach.

By Seth Gamino '01

Varsity state was quite the experience for our Friar Wrestlers. Sophomore Conor Paris had his first trip down to Champaign, Illinois. He wrestled tough and lost on day 2. Conor is very eager to get back under the lights next season.

170-pound competitor Conor Paris '22 (River Forest) hopes to be back downstate in 2021!

Jimmy Liston went 2-2 and finished in the top 10 in state. Jimmy wrestled aggressive and was deadly with his under hook throws. He got some downstate nerves out of his system and looks to be a podium finisher next season.

Like teammate Paris, heavyweight Jimmy "Jimbo" Liston '22 (Hinsdale) also plays football -- and looks to be back in Champaign again next year as a junior.

Mathew Zuber had his best wrestling of the year downstate. He went 1-1 on day one and then went on a tear winning his next three to place 4th in Illinois. Zuber's performance was impressive. At the beginning of the year, he wanted to be an All-State wrestler and he accomplished that. He worked real hard for it, and I am very proud of him.

Coach Gamino with Matt Zuber '20 (Oak Park), who competed in the 150-pound weight class this year -- his third consecutive appearance downstate!

The Friars are a young team and the bulk comes back next season. The whole team is excited for their future!
