June 9, 2020

Fenwick High School names Steve Thompson as Aquatics Director and Head Coach of Girls’ and Boys’ Swimming and Diving.

Fenwick High School is excited to announce that Steve Thompson will be taking over as Aquatics Director. In addition, Mr. Thompson will be our new Head Coach for Girls’ Swimming and Diving as well as Head Coach for Boys’ Swimming and Diving. On the girls’ teams, he replaces long-time Coach Renee Miller, who stepped away following last season. On the boys’ side, to streamline the men’s and women’s swimming programs under new leadership, Luke McGuire ’90 is stepping aside after 15 years and much success. Mr. McGuire remains a valued member of our faculty.

Thompson’s experiences as a coach include six years as the Head Men’s’ and Women’s Coach at Lewis University (Romeoville, IL) as well as a stint as an Assistant Coach at North Carolina State University. Earlier in his career, he was the Head Coach at Seneca Valley High School (PA) and Farragut High School (TN).

Fenwick Athletic Director, Scott Thies ’99 said of Thompson, “Steve has a wealth of experience both at the high school and collegiate levels. Steve has had great success in the pool coaching women and men. We look forward to building upon the great tradition of success at Fenwick and continuing to help our kids become great students, great athletes and great people.”

When asked about this new opportunity, Steve Thompson said, “Thank you, Fr. Peddicord, Principal Groom and especially Athletic Director Scott Thies for coordinating this very special and deeply personal opportunity for me and my family. I am honored to represent the shield and I humbly accept the challenge of building upon the Friars’ championship legacy. It is truly a privilege for me to join our highly accomplished swimmers on the pool deck, and I am excited to work with our staff to establish Fenwick as the aquatics resource in our community.

In addition to his success as a coach, Thompson also has a close connection to Fenwick: His father-in-law is Friar Hall of Famer and former All-American swimmer George Wendt ’65. For more information on Thompson’s background and coaching history, please click below:
