The Computer Science/Physics Department’s goals for our students are to provide a solid foundation for college-level work, to provide an extensive laboratory experience, and to develop crucial reasoning skills. We are convinced that scientific insights bring our students closer to the truth and to the Creator of truth and that a Catholic Christian student with a profound understanding of science will mature with enriched religious beliefs.
The department offers a variety of courses on many levels, from college preparatory level to honors, advanced honors and Advanced Placement. We offer AP Physics 1 and 2, and AP physics C, AP Computer Science, Data Structures Honors, Technical Drafting & 3D Printing, Robotics and more.
Academic competitions include the Academic Challenge (formerly known as WYSE) and the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS). Fenwick is consistently ranked nationally and at the state level and has won many championships over the years, including the WYSE State Championship in 2016 and the TEAMS National Divisional Championship in 2017. We also participate in the IIT Bridge Building Contest. Extracurricular clubs include the Robotics Club and the Computer Club.
Most of the Computer Science/Physics Department faculty holds advanced degrees in CS and engineering. Additionally, most of our faculty members have worked in the privater sector prior to teaching. There is a combined total of over 200 years of teaching experience. Faculty members have won the following awards: Golden Apple Award, WGN TV's Thanks to the Teacher and Top Five Chicago Teachers, IIT's Outstanding Educator Award, University of Chicago's Outstanding Physics Teacher and MIT's Outstanding Teacher award.
