Fenwick’s Class of ’23 Sets the Bar High (Again)

A “snapshot” of our seniors and some of their impressive achievements!
Like the 91 graduating classes before them, members of Fenwick High School’s Class of 2023 have made their mark on the Catholic institution in Oak Park, Illinois. Fenwick celebrated its 92nd commencement on May 26, when 269 students received their well-earned diplomas. Sixty-five of those seniors (24% of the class) are recognized as Illinois State Scholars, and 170 (63%) are Presidential Scholars.
Notably, 605 scholarships have been awarded to 204 members (76%) of the Class of ’23 -- from 155 different colleges and agencies. The monetary value of these awards adds up to more than $44.6 million!
Individually:
Elite "Mathletes" & STEM Scholars
In 2022-23 team contests, Friar “mathletes” placed first in Illinois regional competition, out-performing staunch competition from Latin School of Chicago and north suburban Lake Forest Academy. For the 30th consecutive year, Fenwick qualified all 33 members of its Math Team for the State Math Finals, where the Friars placed second amid a competitive field of approximately 60 other high schools (Division 2A). Only twice in the 43-year history of the contest has Fenwick finished higher. Our state champs this year: Toby Yang, Algebra 2; Kyra Miller and Sean Nairn, 2-person Frosh/Soph Team; Vincent Meo and Yang, 2-person Jr./Senior; and Miller, Cole Ude, Finnbarr Munley and Nairn for Geometry.
"For the first time ever in the same year, both our Frosh/Soph and Junior/Senior 2-person teams qualified for the 4-team playoff for first place in this event," reports Math Coach Roger Finnell '59. "And, in close results, both teams won!" Also noteworthy: Yang was an individual champion for the third straight year (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2).
Fenwick’s ACES team won third place in the 1500 Division of the state finals at Eastern Illinois University. Top Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science (ACES, formerly known as WYSE) scorers include state champion in math, Quinn Hynes, who also placed 4th in physics! Anka Lampke placed 2nd for English, and Kyra Miller placed 6th in math. The Scholastic Bowl Team won the IHSA 2A Regional, defeating Downers Grove North 540-240 in the championship match. Additionally:
In athletics, the Fenwick girls’ tennis team won the Class 1A Illinois State Championship this past fall. Twenty-six student-athletes are moving on to play sports collegiately at the next level.
