Fenwick Inducts Four New Members Into Hall Of Fame

Fenwick High School hosted its annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon on Friday, April 4, 2008, and welcomed four new members to the pantheon of honor. Ceremonies began with a morning assembly at Fenwick High School and concluded with a mid-day luncheon at the Oak Park Country Club.

Bob Dixon, Director of Development and Alumni Relations for Fenwick High School, Princiapl Dr. James Quaid and Associate Principal Richard Borsch, introduced the recipients in an all-school special guest assembly. The following are the 2008 Hall of Fame inductees with their Fenwick graduation year: David Lies ‘67, Timothy Rooney ‘75, Otto Rutt ‘79 and Jack Spatafora ‘49.

David LiesA passionate, quiet man, David Lies embodies the idea that success isn’t complete until society becomes the ultimate beneficiary. He has risen to the top of the real estate market as president of Remanco, Inc. He and his company are highly regarded in the industry and have been for years. By many measures, he is a great success.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Lies rose to the occasion in 2000 initiating what became known as “The Lies Challenge.” His response to a call from Fenwick resulted in contributions of $4,000,000 in nine months from 200 people to fund construction of the current wrestling room, the faculty dining area, restoration of the auditorium, and the development of two technology classrooms. This challenge and its success further allowed Fenwick to move on to complete the Light for the 21st Century capital campaign. Lies also took a leadership role in this effort and stands today as a testimony to humble generosity.

He considers among his proudest achievements his years as a student at Fenwick, where he cultivated not only his intellect, but also established a clear sense of values and priorities. Having transferred into Fenwick from Quigley Seminary his sophomore year, he participated in the drama club, the German club and intramurals.

After graduating from Fenwick in 1967, he went on to Notre Dame, where he received a BBA in 1971. He earned his MBA from The University of Chicago shortly afterward. His recipe for success is simply this, “give 100% always; be a good Christian; give back to others who have not had the same opportunities – this is the obligation of the gifted.” David is one of four brothers who have graduated from Fenwick (including Peter, Mark and Donald). He and his wife Linda live in Wilmette, IL.

Tim RooneyAs a senior partner of Winston & Strawn, Timothy Rooney keeps a low profile despite his involvement in complex and high-profile litigation. His client list is impressive, including Aon Corporation, Verizon, Harris Bank, Gov. George Ryan, Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, and Bell Atlantic. Despite this, Rooney prefers to keep his core values simple – try to do my best at whatever I do, and try to treat people right, and that means everyone.

As a student at Fenwick, he excelled in football and basketball as well as academics. Among his most noted achievements was winning the Lawless Award for Outstanding Student Athlete and being named starting safety in the first annual Catholic-Public league All Star game. He also participated in the French Club, Banua, and wrote for The Wick. After graduating in 1975 from Fenwick, Rooney attended Northwestern University where he played football and, in 1979, received a BA in Economics with honors. He went on to the University of Notre Dame Law School, earning his JD in 1982. That same year he joined the law firm of Winston and Strawn as an Associate, and was elected full partner in 2002.

He was Chairman on the Board of Trustees for Fenwick, a position he served from 1999-2005. He also received Fenwick’s Accipiter Award in 2005. Fenwick alum Robert Cooney, himself an attorney and member of the Fenwick Hall of Fame, comments that Rooney “is dedicated, committed and effective in his profession and in his position as Chairman of the Board for Fenwick. Most people don’t realize the time and effort he puts in. He does so much on behalf of all of us and isn’t really interested in the accolades – just what’s in the best interest of Fenwick.”

Rooney and his wife Kim live in Western Springs, IL. Two of their three sons, Tim and Mike, are Fenwick graduates. Their youngest, Matt, is currently a sophomore.

Colonel Otto RuttColonel Otto J. Rutt epitomizes the image of the soldier-scholar, but beyond his achievements of economist, aviator, and warrior stands a man of devotion – to God, his country, his friends, his family, his ideals, and all humanity. As a Marine Corps officer and fighter pilot, he has served two combat tours, one in the 1991Persian Gulf War and one in Operation Iraqi Freedom II in 1994. He currently holds the billet of senior Marine Corps member to the Defense Human Capital Strategy Program Executive Office. He has been decorated with numerous awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the Seas Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

As a Fenwick student, Rutt was engrossed in football. As he tells it, “if I wasn’t studying, I was training. I loved it. During the season, it dominated my waking existence. I loved the anticipation of game week, the pep rallies, the team Mass, the whole struggle; I was mesmerized and energized.” Yet, despite his attachment to football, he managed to balance sports with academics, earning acceptance to Harvard. Following is graduation from Fenwick in 1979, he matriculated to Harvard and in three years earned an economics degree. He went into the Marine Corps in 1982 and became an F/A-18 pilot. In 1992, he worked as a commodity futures and options broker with Goldman Sachs and later with The First National Bank of Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago, where in 1993 he received an MBA with dual concentrations of Finance and Business Policy. By 2000, he began a stint as commercial airline pilot while also serving as a Marine Reserve Officer. In 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel and received the distinction of “honor graduate” from the Air War College. He currently holds the position of Senior Marine Advisor.

He and his wife Judith live in Alexandria, VA.

Jack SpadaforaJack Spatafora’s 40 year career as an educator includes chairing and reforming history curricula in schools like Fenwick, Niles, New Trier and Loyola University. As a writer it includes executive addresses and network documentaries for presidents, ambassadors and CEO’s. In speaking of his career, Spatafora tells that, “boiled down it has meant helping students think a little better and executives sound a little better. On my best days, I like to imagine myself an Oak Park Mr. Chips.”

While at Fenwick, Spatafora began sharpening his rhetorical skills as captain of the debate team and columnist for The Wick. He also participated in the annual Blackfriars Drama Guild annual productions. He achieved honors as an award-winning debater and member of the National Honor Society. At his Fenwick graduation in 1949, he gave the valedictory address. He speaks of his Fenwick experience thusly, “I’ve seen Fenwick both as a student and for a while as a faculty member, where I not only used what I learned, but saw how the Fenwick experience continues in the lives of those who came after us. I also received preparation for life in several ways – from the courses and teachers an academic and moral readiness for life; from debate knowing how to organize thoughts and think on my feet; from The Wick and theatre knowing how to communicate with the heart as well as the head.”

He received his BA from Loyola and MA from Northwestern, where he also completed doctoral work in history. He and his wife Joan live in Park Ridge, IL, and have three grown children, Rick, Debra, and Lisa.

Fenwick Hall of Fame Award The Fenwick High School Hall of Fame honors alumni/ae and friends of Fenwick whose lives exemplify, in an extraordinary manner, the values and standards of Excellence, Leadership, and Tradition.

Three Fenwick Students Named to Peacebuilders Initiative

Anna Michalski, Genevieve Nemeth and Jeanette Vecchio, juniors at Fenwick High School, were named to participate in this summer’s Peacebuilders Initiative. Peacebuilders is an innovative program of the Bernardin Center that prepares Catholic high school youth for leadership roles in peacemaking, reconciliation, and conflict transformation, and inspires them to consider ministry as a life choice. These three students will spend a week on the campus of the Chicago Theological Union, studying theology in the morning and working at an outreach program in the afternoon. Theology courses are taught by professors from the Chicago Theological Union staff.

Following the summer training, Michalski, Nemeth and Vecchio will devise and implement a peace project during their senior year. Past Peacebuilders have created programs such as a non-violent conflict resolution program for grade school students. Peacebuilders selection is very competitive and it is rare for a high school to place three students as Fenwick has done this year.

Easter Message from Fenwick's President

Jesus is Risen! Yes, he is truly Risen! Alleluia!

With these words, and words that are similar, we hear the “good news” of Christianity. And, how desperately our world, and we ourselves, need to hear and be reminded of these words. Jesus has conquered sin and suffering, he has won the victory over suffering and death! How much we need to be reminded of this great news!

So many people need the reminder that God’s love is more powerful than the difficult circumstances people face here and around the world. Perhaps as you read this message, you are reminded of loved ones who are sick, or serving in the military overseas, or relatives who struggle with finances, or other types of hardships. We know there are many parts of our country and our world where people do not have enough to eat, do not have adequate health care, and worry about keeping their job or finding a job. Whatever it is, we are challenged to remember the ultimate victory of Jesus, which sends new life everywhere. And given the pervasive action of the Spirit, we too can each be an instrument of the new life of Jesus by remembering he dwells in every human being.

May you hear the invitation of Jesus to embrace his new life, and may we ask Jesus for the grace that we may be instruments of new life not only for those we meet, but for all people in our world. May this time of new life be a time of refreshment and relaxation, deep spiritual growth, and a time to know that the risen presence of Christ can permeate even the darkest corners of our lives and our world.

Fenwick Student Chris Mayor Receives Junior Citizen Award

Fenwick High School junior, Chris Mayor, was recently awarded with The Chicago Park District’s Junior Citizen Award at a recent dinner ceremony. The Junior Citizen program recognizes high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate leadership in their local parks, school and community and serve as positive role models. A panel of judges selected Mayor as a regional finalist based on his contributions to Shabbona Park and various service projects. The selection process begins at the local park level and culminates in a citywide competition.

Mayor has been involved in park district programs since childhood, “The challenges I faced as a child participating in sporting events through the park district has helped carry me through challenges I face today in life, such as school,” says Chris who plays on Fenwick’s varsity volleyball team. Besides participating in sports, you can find Mayor helping out with fundraisers for New Horizon Center and Misericordia, which provide services for developmentally disabled children and adults. Chris’ inspiration is his cousin who has autism, “If my cousin understood what I was doing for her, I know she would appreciate it.” Mayor’s school service project involves working on social skills with his cousin who he takes out to movies and helps with her reading skills.

Mayor has been selected to advance to the Chicago Park District’s citywide competition where he will deliver a speech and be interviewed once again. If chosen as the citywide winner, Mayor will receive a college scholarship.

Black History Month - The Little Rock Nine

The Little Rock Nine, as they later came to be called, were the first black teenagers to attend all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. These remarkable young African-American students challenged segregation in the deep South and won.

Although Brown v. Board of Education outlawed segregation in schools, many racist school systems defied the law by intimidating and threatening black students—Central High School was a notorious example. But the Little Rock Nine were determined to attend the school and receive the same education offered to white students, no matter what. Things grew ugly and frightening right away. On the first day of school, the governor of Arkansas ordered the state's National Guard to block the black students from entering the school. Imagine what it must have been like to be a student confronted by armed soldiers! President Eisenhower had to send in federal troops to protect the students.

But that was only the beginning of their ordeal. Every morning on their way to school angry crowds of whites taunted and insulted the Little Rock Nine—they even received death threats. One of the students, fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Eckford, said "I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the mob. . . . I looked into the face of an old woman, and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat at me." As scared as they were, the students wouldn't give up, and several went on to graduate from Central High. Nine black teenagers challenged a racist system and defeated it.

ROSA PARKS

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks, an African-American seamstress, left work and boarded a bus for home. As the bus became crowded, the bus driver ordered Parks to give up her seat to a white passenger. Montgomery's buses were segregated, with the seats in the front reserved for "whites only." Blacks had to sit at the back of the bus. But if the bus was crowded and all the "whites only" seats were filled, black people were expected to give up their seats—a black person sitting while a white person stood would never be tolerated in the racist South. Rosa had had enough of such humiliation, and refused to give up her seat. "I felt I had a right to stay where I was," she said. "I wanted this particular driver to know that we were being treated unfairly as individuals and as a people." The bus driver had her arrested.

Martin Luther King, Jr. heard about Parks’ brave defiance and launched a boycott of Montgomery buses. The 17,000 black residents of Montgomery pulled together and kept the boycott going for more than a year. Finally, the Supreme Court intervened and declared segregation on buses unconstitutional. Rosa Parks and the boycotters defeated the racist system, and she became known as "the mother of the civil rights movement."

Now's the Time to take a long hard look at your IRA: The Pension Protection Act of 2006, Fenwick, and You

In August of 2006, the President signed into law what has become known as “The Pension Act,” formally entitled the Pension Protection Act of 2006, P.L. 109-280. This sweeping legislation might possibly affect you, and surely can be beneficial to Fenwick High School.

The Pension Act allows those who are 70 1/2 or older to distribute from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) up to $100,000 per year to nearly any public charity and, at the same time, that person may exclude that distribution from their gross income for federal income tax purposes.

There are many attractive features to the Pension Act. Fenwick encourages all to whom this may apply to seek advice from their tax professional. This may by just right for you and for Fenwick.

This provision expires on December 31, 2007, so please consider an IRA rollover gift to Fenwick High School right now!

Call Bob Dixon at 708.386.0127 x124 for more details.

Letters to Santa

For the second year in a row C.A.F.E (Cultural Awareness For Everyone) is hosting Fenwick’s “Letters To Santa” program. C.A.F.E has collected over 200 names of children from the Children’s Home and Aid ranging in ages between 2 and 17. For many of these children the gifts being given by Fenwick students and faculty will be the only gifts they will receive this Christmas.

Our students and faculty have risen to the challenge presented them and all 208 letters to Santa were enthusiastically distributed before Thanksgiving. We have already started collecting the gifts and are astounded by the generosity our Fenwick students so far have portrayed. On December 14th members of C.A.F.E will have the privilege of distributing these gifts to the children at the Children’s Home and sharing with them in the Christmas season.

Construction Continues

A significant amount of our external construction project has been finished. Work is progressing well on the interior portion of the project. The new fence along East Avenue with its stone terminal points has been erected. The metal frame is in place along the south elevation of the school to support the cloister walk we will build. The Reception Center is in place along with its stone arch. It is a very impressive effect.

The nine new instructional spaces all have their walls and floors in place. Some of the rooms have wall cabinets and counter space installed. The plumbing work for a Chemistry Lab is rather sophisticated. That room is a little less finished than the others.

The new mechanical/electrical/plumbing infrastructure is installed. This should markedly improve the quality of air flow in the Auditorium, the Student Cafeteria, and the Lawless Gymnasium. The new generator/trash compactor brick corral is completed. The construction fence is pulled back to allow bus access and parking behind the school. Work is on schedule for a January completion date. View more photos.

Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Fenwick's Touchstone Receives Top Accolades

The 2006-2007 edition of Touchstone, Fenwick’s art and literary magazine, was recently awarded First Place with Special Merit honors by the American Scholastic Press Association. The award places Fenwick’s publication among the top five percent of all high school literary publications in the country.

The ASPA (American Scholastic Press Association) evaluates and scores college and high school literary magazines on criteria of content coverage, organization, design, presentation and creativity. Touchstone tallied a total score of 970 points out of a possible 1,000 points. As a result, Touchstone is a finalist for Most Outstanding High School Literary-Art Magazine for 2007. Notification will take place in December.

It’s a testament to the work and creative efforts of all those at Fenwick who write poetry, compose fiction, paint, take photos, and sketch images, comments Jeff Verver, Creative Writing instructor and Touchstone Moderator. There’s plenty of quality material from all the students, though most of the credit should go to those who edit the magazine not bad at a school known for its exceptional curriculum in math and science.

Anne Gallery, one of last year’s editors-in-chief and current senior, adds, Like many things at Fenwick, Touchstone was the product of a dedicated group of students, working hard, collaborating, and sharing their various talents. The excellent creative work submitted made the editors' jobs, if anything, more difficult. Hours were spent designing everything from font size to what the theme of our publication was going to be. I feel I can speak for my peers by saying that we have all learned valuable skills we will continue to use for years to come. I am honored to have been a part Touchstone.”

Nine Fenwick Seniors Named National Merit Semi-Finalists

Nine Fenwick High School seniors have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: John Bellaire (Clarendon Hills), Ian Clark (Downers Grove), John Goedert (Oak Park), Matthew Healy (Elmhurst), Kyle Henderson (Hinsdale), Brittany Kelleher (Oak Park), Evan Martinez (Berwyn), Jennifer Schulte (Burr Ridge), and Caitlin Visek (Lombard). “While the National Merit Scholarship Corporation admonishes us not to use the number of Merit winners to rank schools, the fact remains that year after year Fenwick students have done well on the National Merit exam. This is a credit to both their own ability, and the ability of our faculty to ready our students for standardized testing which certainly is used by colleges to some degree to help place students and gain admissions,” says Richard Borsch, associate principal and Student Services counselor at Fenwick.

National Merit Semi-Finalist status signifies a student has posted one of the top scores in his or her state on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) taken as a high school junior and is in the top one to three percent nationally among the approximately 1.4 million students who took this exam in October 2006.

The nine National Merit Semi-Finalists from Fenwick High School are among 16,000 academically talented high school seniors from across the nation who will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $34 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by possessing an outstanding academic record, being endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earning SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. In addition, the Semi-Finalists and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application which includes a self-descriptive essay and information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities

Fenwick Faculty and Staff Committed to Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

For the second year faculty and staff at Fenwick High School competed in the Accenture Chicago Triathlon held on August 26th. Last year three teams participated with the men’s and women’s team earning first place in the co-ed corporate relay class. This year, 18 faculty and staff members comprising of six teams demonstrated their athletic capabilities in the Olympic-distance triathlon. “It is important to encourage faculty to be healthy and to be good role models for the students” says Principal Dr. James Quaid.

The Accenture Chicago Triathlon is the world’s largest, averaging 8,500 athletes participating in a 1.5 K swim, 40K bike ride and a 10K run. Athletes compete in all three sports, or form a three-person relay team with each member competing in a different sport. “Most of this year’s participants were first time competitors,” says Cindy Jones who met up with her fellow colleagues at 4.00 a.m. in Fenwick’s parking lot before boarding a bus to Monroe Harbor.

Participation in the triathlon is just one aspect of Fenwick’s commitment to promoting a healthier lifestyle within its community. The Student Life/Academic Committee, with the guidance of sub-committee doctors, are taking a number of preventative steps to promote health by including strength training, cardiac screenings and head injury diagnostic testing for students, faculty and staff. The committee was also instrumental in the revamping of the school lunch menu to include healthier options.

This year’s faculty and staff triathletes are: Swimmers; Cindy Jones, Patrick Mulcahy, Dave Perry, Molly Stepansky, and Jeff Verver. Cyclists: Richard Beebe, Kimberly Darkes, Shawna Hennessey, Daniel Rodde, and Elmer Sweet. Runners: Irene Drago, Kati Duffy, Thomas Egan, Dr. Marissa Porter, and Gerard Sullivan. Fenwick Returns to Edline

By popular demand Fenwick will return to using Edline, a web based program which will allow parents and students the opportunity to view any posted grades.  This is the program we used in the 2005/2006 school year.  You will no longer have to wait until progress reports or report cards are mailed out to keep abreast of a students progress.  This information will be at your fingertips, literally, now.

Teachers may also post the class syllabus, assignment sheets, projects, and other items pertinent to the course they are teaching.  They may even suggest a link to another web site that may contain information to enhance the class subject matter.

Teachers will be making every effort, as they have in the past, to correct and grade assignments shortly after they are due.  Once this is done, they will have to enter their grades in a grade book program and then send those grades to this web site.  Please allow about one week for grades to be posted after an assignment is due.

Because this is confidential information, viewing is limited to parents and students and is password protected.  Parents can pick up their password and directions anytime during mini-class night, this Thursday, August 30th, in the student cafeteria.  If you cannot make it on that night, they will be mailed to you.

Fenwick wishes you the best of success in this new endeavor. If you have any problems or questions, please feel free to call Ms. Diana Caponigri (ext. 111).
